Long term fans of London based trio South may be slightly disappointed that the latest single ‘You Are One’, lifted from the band’s third album ‘Adventures In The Underground Journey To The Stars’, is only being made available in download format. Despite this fact, the single lacks none of the quality and lyrical bite demonstrated by fellow tracks on ‘AITUJTTS’ - if anything ‘You Are One’ packs more of a punch than any other and evidence of real experimentation.
The track kicks off with an energetic, impellent power and driving guitars in the main from Jamie McDonald are evocative of bands like the Stereophonics, The Holloways or Doves. Within no time at all though the tempo changes and a spell of melodic guitar rock with psychedelic '60s overtones streams through conjuring up images of The Stone Roses. Vocally, lead singer Joel Cadbury has an uncanny likeness to the vocals of Ian Brown, retaining a trenchant bite to his vocals an obvious dissimilarity to Brown’s husky Mancunian sound. And from beginning to end that’s all that ‘You Are One’ is, a mix of these varying styles, but what a highly appealing brew it is.
