John Butler Trio – ‘Funky Tonight’ (Atlantic) Released 30/04/07

‘Funky Tonight’ is, as you might expect, quite a funky little number.  Opening with lightening fast guitar twiddling and drum bashing, it actually sounds a little bit like country music.  Not quite what you would expect from a funky track, but the effect is surprisingly attractive.  The guitars aren’t too heavy and the twiddling (such a technical term) not too excessive; so the result is a piece of light country-funky rock.  Pleasant enough, and the blending of multiple styles is interesting, but it doesn’t have the edge to make it an immediate favourite.
