Frank Turner - 'The Real Damage' (Xtra Mile) Released 07/05/07

When you sing, do you accidentally sound American? I do, and I’m from Yorkshire. I used to think it was refreshing when a singer sang with their own regional accent, but I’ve begun to think that this is equally artificial. It’s all about creating a persona, about drawing attention to your own background, wearing your (usually) working-class upbringing on your sleeve (cf. Arctic Monkeys, Jamie T, Mike Skinner, etc.). More important than the accent you sing with is having something interesting to say with it, and sadly former Million Dead man Frank Turner doesn’t. Acoustic guitar, carefully placed lyrical references to the mundane and everyday, occasional bouts of swearing – all point towards a rabble-rousing street troubadour, but Frank’s songs just don’t cut the mustard.

  • Frank Turner is vital to the current music scene in my opinion, providing an alternative to pre packaged alternative music by numbers of many different sub genres that seem to be appearing. The song topics aren’t particularly original but the lyrics are sung with a sense of humour and honesty that makes them sound fresh. He also puts on an amazing live show so go and see him!

  • A very inaccurate review. The song tells a story that anyone can relate to and is sung in and English accent which is where he is from! I’m guessing Oliver likes the new gibberish classic from the Chilli Peppers.
