Ron Sexsmith - 'Retriever' (Parlophone) Released 17/05/04

three and a half stars

Ron SexsmithWhen you think of Canadian music, it’s likely the names Bryan Adams or Celine Dion come to mind, and not that of Ron Sexsmith.  He counts Elvis Costello and Chris Martin amongst his fans, and such royalty as Rod Stewart and Elton John have covered his songs, so he’s certainly got the endorsement of his peers.  ‘Retriever’ is his seventh album, and features contributions from Ed Hardcourt and Travis’ Neil Primrose.

What is immediately striking is Sexsmith’s unique voice, which is smooth and deep.  It creates a very relaxing opening track on ‘Hard Bargain’, combined with soft drumming and gentle strumming.  ‘Imaginary Friends’ is more of the same, while ‘Not About To Lose’ has an uplifting chorus and is lyrically very positive – something that is found throughout the record.  ‘Tomorrow In Her Eyes’ is a piano-led love ballad, which is well arranged and gently introduces strings to compliment his vocal ability.

Sexsmith also tries his hand equally successfully at more up-tempo songs, the first of which is ‘From Now On’.  Again it is very positive both in its sound and lyrically.  ‘Wishing Wells’ was inspired by a night of bad television, and features a simple yet effective bass line that drives the song – perhaps Sexsmith should watch more TV!  ‘Happiness’ is another rockier number, and the album ends how it began,  ‘I Know It Well’ cruises along gently, and allows that wonderful voice to sweep you away for a final time.
