Despite The Twang's apparently cheetah-powered hype machine burning into overdrive, ‘Wide Awake’ is somewhat disappointing. Lyrics of teeth falling out could draw some sort of Freudian analysis, but it seems unlikely he would bother. This indie-lie, Hard Fi-esque dirge does little to deserve intellectual inquisitiveness. Lyrics of “thoughts racing, like they always have been” do little to rescue a rather meandering backdrop of macho drums and guitars, with vocals delivered with irritating urgency. The single draws on 90s Madchester, but somehow makes it sound decidedly crap: this is an anthem for people who buy CDs from Woolworths, or buy festival tickets on Ebay to see KT Tunstall.
