Arcade Fire have sensationally hit out at supergroups such as The Rolling Stones, Oasis and U2 for their ambitions to be the biggest band in the world.
Band frontman Win Butler attacked blanket marketing campaigns used by some bands which he believes almost force fans to like the music.
Speaking about his band’s low key approach, Butler said: "It's not like we shun success, but at the same time we don't want to shove it down people's throats. In the UK there's this kind of rock star competition.
"I don't know if U2 started it, or The Stones or Oasis but a lot of bands think in terms of: 'I'm going to be the biggest band in the world. **** all those bands who've got no ambition'. I think that's a total crock of shit.
He continued to the NME: "There's nothing less interesting to me than the idea of marketing the **** out of something so people are forced to like it. Some bands are just manipulating people to buy music. That's how 90 per cent of the record industry works! It's basically the same as selling a ****ing toaster or a cruise package."

Excellent band, but it’s not like you can blame U2 et al for being mega stars. Who wouldn’t achieve that sort of status given the chance?
<yawn>
- I like chokolade..

- If you play music and do not have ambitions - fine. Then there is no reason to slam the groups who have them. They are are reach successful, famous and happy and thus they got what they wanted. You are lazy and you want everybody to love you. It may happen in 100 years when your shit become fashion. And if you say you do not have the ambitions most likely you are liar. You are just not so good as they are )))))))

- i guess he refers more to U2 an the ipod stuff, i guess he speaks the truth of overkill on promotion - it really turns me off bands. I normally wait for the hype to be over before checkin out albums normally they arent as great as the marketing suggests. Success isnt everything, making good music should come first - if u cant make good music, most bands get away with heavy marketing - i refer to u Oasis, Green Day and Fall Out Boy!
