Goose - 'Bring It On' (Skint) Released 12/02/07

Sweaty, sleazy, sultry and sexy Goose are coming over here to show that there is more to Belgium than chocolate and EU decisions. Kicking off with ‘Black Gloves’ is cocky as it’s their best song, but inspired as it grabs you by the scruff of the neck and demands a listener’s attention. Fast, relentless and furious it’s a non-stop dirty electronic slice of madness. Synths, guitars and drums all vying for attention interspersed only with the odd shout of “Hey!” Who needs lyrics when your music is this good? Next up, ‘British Mode’ which sounds like the White Rose Movement crossed with The Rakes before turning into a filthy guitar workout.

Friends and former touring partners of Soulwax, Goose have clearly learnt a trick or 2 from their mentors on combining glamorous electro with anthemic lyrics and song writing. It would have been far too easy ‘For Bring It On’ to descend into an inaccessible pile of self indulgence but it straddles the barrier between pretentious and utter brilliance to perfection, providing something for everyone. ‘Bring It On’ the album title track, is similar to ‘British Mode’ by being slow to begin with before turning a corner, or more precisely down an alleyway into the murkiness of a filthy riff.

The albums more relaxed points are also effective as they showcase a different side to Goose, one that can calm things down a bit. ‘Slow Down’ and ‘Girl’ both have the feel of an ambient MSTRKRFT remix to them. As far as weaknesses are concerned ‘Bring It On’ has very few. ‘Modern Vision’ is perhaps not the strongest track on the album but that is more nit-picking than a genuine grievance. Stand out track by far is ‘Everybody’ which sounds like Primal Scream challenging Death From Above to a drinking contest, we’re not sure who wins but it gets messy.

We urge you to check out Goose. Ignore the stupid name and open your minds for a minute. Fun, frivolous and foot tappingly good. You need them in your life.
