Wavering on the brink of diy-pop and alt-art-rock are Wakefield band boys Piskie Sits. Four musical wanderers reminding us exactly why we fell in love with Sonic Youth and leaving us wondering whatever did actually happen to The Breeders.
In a world that nowadays too easily opts for the chart friendly un-obscure musical band ramblings this release is a breath of well-needed alcohol flavoured air. That well missed I’m-kind-of-drunk-and-lost off key vocal delivery has hints of early Pavement, but not in a copy and paste way. There’s a sincere Britishness to this lot’s messy yet organised melodic mutterings. Just the way we like it.
‘Good To Eat’ is a cymbal smashing monster with creepings of full on let’s fuck shit up rock. Perfect to end a gig on. The slower melodic musings of ‘Witches’ lean towards the pure pop band that the Piskie Sits could be. A simply perfect off the wall ditty about just how nasty the fairer sex can be. And the closing corker of ‘Evens’ is an undiscovered gem. Opening with just guitar string pluckings and that same put-the-beer-down-you’ve-had-enough voice it just goes to show that you don’t need a multi-million pound producer and mega bucked record label behind you to write a classic song. But wait. It doesn’t end there…The last half of the song is a wailing wolf of a rock out. Brilliant.
So, bypass the tongue twister name, crack open a bottle of Merlot and chain-smoke to this lovely lot as their songs come straight from the mind of a genius. More please.
