'Rootless Tree' forms one of the most potent tracks from Damien Rice's latest album '9', and in this single version it takes on a radio-friendly-rubber-eraser-to-the-lyrics change - the album version's chorus of "**** you's" are tamed by the lyric change to "trust you" or some such and so lose some of the angst and fervour that this song carried. A chipper ranting-track nonetheless with Vivienne Long lending cello to the band and Damien clearly expressing confusion and frustration in a relationship - a hey babe, I love you but you drive me mental - "...I love you/ and all we've been through/...and if you hate me/ then hate me so good that you can let me out...". A track with broad appeal that'll please the radio-programmers and confound the fans.
