Jarvis Cocker has offered to write Britain’s Eurovision Song Contest entry next year following the surprise news fellow indie icon Morrissey is penning 2007’s effort.
The former Pulp lead singer says he has always wanted to try his fey hand at reversing Britain’s recent dismal record, and has voiced his support for Morrissey’s shock move into the kitsch musical jamboree.
He told BBC Five Live, “I’m not going to compete with Mozzer if he’s going to do it. I’m sure he’ll write something good.
“The door is always open if they want to ask me. I’ve always wanted to write one for them. Maybe I’ll do it next year.”
Following the news today that Cocker’s debut solo album had secured a BRITS nomination in the ‘Best Male’ category, Jarvis promised their would be no repeat of his drunken performance at the event in 1996 when his impromptu ‘stage invasion’ during Michael Jackson’s risible performance of ‘Earth Song’ saw him ejected and arrested.
He vowed, “They won’t have to manacle me to a chair. I’ll be well behaved.”
