Priding themselves on their wilful eccentricity, The View’s third single in support of feverishly anticipated debut long player ‘Hats Off To The Buskers’ has the northern paws of producer Owen Morris all over it. Sounding like ‘Don’t Look Back Into The Sun’ had it been recorded on poppers, ‘Same Jeans’ Libertines debt is undeniable. The harmonica fills and exuberant yelps reek of Barat’s lot; even the band’s first demo was opportunistically thrust into the hands of celebrity crack pipe Pete Doherty.
Chuck in some Housemartin’s ‘Happy Hour’ for good measure, and The Dundee quartet are staking a brazenly early claim for their band of the year credentials. Let down by some no-brainer lyrics: “I’ve had the same jeans on for four days now/I’m gonna go to a disco in the middle of the town,” ‘Same Jeans’ doesn’t match the drop-everything-at-once appeal of ‘Wasted Little DJs’ and ‘Superstar Tradesman’, but in a sea of indie dross, it stands out. The View are living up to their name by dividing opinion on the Gigwise forums, but if ‘Same Jeans’ coda tempo change can’t induce one of those goose bumps on your arm moments, then start checking your pulse. Fast. Hats off to the buskers indeed.
