Being able to put that little ‘Mercury Nominated’ sticker on your album sleeve can do a lot for a band. For Guillemots, however, their Mercury nomination simply reaffirmed the increasing demand for their music – from teenagers to the teenagers Aunts, Uncle-in-law. Not to disappoint the masses, therefore, and with ‘Through The Windowpane’ continuing to soar through the periodic table (Gold at last check), Guillemots release, ‘Annie Let’s Not Wait.’ Like its three predecessors ‘Annie’ includes all the ‘Guillemotisms’ that will strike an instant rapport with pop heartstrings everywhere. For starters, there are the increasingly bizarre lyrics of Fife Dangerfield (“So I threw it out a fishing line and said / catch your meal and then catch mine”), which this time come packaged amongst popalicious harmonies for good measure. Then there’s just the right level of quaint and dreamy melodies. All the ingredients combine to prove just why in 2007, the Guillemots will still be the only serious pop outfit worth listening to.
