Campag Velocet defy a comprehensive definition. They describe themselves as a group that embrace 'Psychedelic punk rock hip-hop, space guitars that soar over hostile beats, with attitude'. Yet their retro-futuristic, vehement and layered sound is much more complex than this.
Formed in the mid-1990's, the band admit they are the spawn of Anthony Burgess's dystopian nightmare 'A Clockwork Orange'. Their debut single, 'Drencrom (Velocet Synthemesc)', released on Fierce Panda, was appropriately sung entirely in Nadsat - the 'made up' language used by Alex and his Droogs in the book.
This warped single set the benchmark for their debut album Bon Chic Bon Genre released in November 1999. Named after a French S&M magazine, the album incorporated scuz-rock, stooge's riffs and attitude, Primal Scream ambiance, and orchestral grooves. The discordant music very much matched the paranoia and intricacies of Burgess's text.
Five years later, in July 2004, the group returned with 'It's Beyond Our Control'. Recorded at Bark Studio's with Brian O'Shaughnessy, who recorded 'Screamadelica' there, the album weaves a futuristic web of electronic dreamscapes and vitriol.
