Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood has been named the surprise winner of Radio 3’s 4th annual British Composer Awards.
The multi-instrumentalist has been named favourite artist for his ‘Popcorn Superhet Receiver’ orchestral piece - coincidentally commissioned by the BBC - which was “inspired by radio static and the extended chords of Polish composer Penderecki’s Thenody for the victims of Hioshima,” according to The Independent.
The controller of Radio 3 Roger Wright says, “It is a great example of Radio 3’s unique cultural patronage.”
