Legendary Beatles producer Sir George Martin has been inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame.
Called ‘the fifth Beatle’ by some, the producer was given the award by the chancellor Gordon Brown at London’s Alexandra Palace.
After receiving a booing from a section of the crowd, Brown said: "George Martin is the most amazing man and I'm proud to be able to present him this evening.
"In 1962, even after every major producer rejected The Beatles and one producer said guitar groups had no future, George Martin made The Beatles the most successful group in history."
Sir George signed The Beatles in the early sixties and went on to produce all of their records.
Upon receiving the induction, the 80-year-old said: "I never realised I was as good as all that. I'm not to be honest, this is hyperbole.
“I think the reason I am here today is I have been a very lucky man and I have worked with the greatest people in showbusiness, performers and writers.
"It rubs off working with people like that, it makes all the difference in the world."
Razorlight frontman Johnny Borrell and Queen drummer Roger Taylor paid tribute by performing a medley of Beatles songs in front of a 30 strong orchestra.
Brian Wilson, Bon Jovi, James Brown and Prince all performed on the night before they were inducted, while Led Zeppelin, Dusty Springfield and Rod Stewart also earned their place.
