Earlier this year Mick Jones unearthed a set of homemade tapes that had been missing for 25 years.
The ‘Vanilla Tapes’ contain demo versions of some ‘London Calling’ tracks plus 6 unreleased tracks including a cover of Bob Dylan’s ‘Man in Me’.
These legendary tapes will now finally be released as part of a 3-disc package to celebrate the 25th anniversary of ‘London Calling’. The package will contain the re-mastered original album and a DVD with interviews and footage of the ‘London Calling’ sessions.
The ‘Vanilla Tapes’ were recorded at a troublesome time for The Clash, having recently split from manager Bernie Rhodes after completing their US tour.
Rolling Stone reports that "In Britain, everybody thought we were over," Simonon recalled. "We felt backed into a corner, so we got quite close with each other, and we just tried to go to work."
"It's strange hearing those songs," said Simonon. "It really conjures up another time."
The CD package is due for release in October.
