Never let it be said that The Maccabees don’t have an eye for timing, seeing as they’re releasing this wonderful new single, (key line: “Do you miss home?”), at exactly the point when 90% of freshers who moved to a new city are crying into their pints because they’ve either caught at least one sexual disease, exceeded their overdraft, or realised that all their friends that went straight to work after college are now earning lots and lots of money. Produced by Stephen Street, ‘First Love’ is the art student younger brother to Maximo Park’s yuppie-indie: messier, poetically reflective, with a heart THIS big. It’s stunning, but ever so sad.
