Neil Hannon is being hailed as one of the best songwriters to grace our fine planet, and, with its emotive lyrics and soulful sincerity, ‘A Lady of a Certain Age’ is doing nothing to dispel the praise. Its wistful tale of a lonely lady who was used to the finer things in life really tugs on the heartstrings; and this sad tale is complemented by simple strumming and a stunning string accompaniment. Not one to bang on if you’re in the party spirit, but the song crafts a beautiful reflection on the passing of time.
