Hot Club De Paris’ album launch party was unfortunately stopped before the band themselves had taken to the stage.
A power cut occurred at the Zanzibar venue in Liverpool during final support act goFaster’s set on Saturday evening (October 14).
There had been a celebratory atmosphere at the packed, balloon adorned venue where fans including friends and family of the band had enjoyed sets by Do Idea, National School and Plans and Apologies, but all was plunged into darkness and silence three songs into GoFaster’s set.
GoFaster initially attempted to carry on but to no avail. People stood round in the venue for 10 minutes or so unsure if the gig would restart. For some reason attempts were made to keep spirits up and people from leaving by a mass humming of ‘Ahhhhhh.’ (A bit like a Kaiser Chiefs chorus – well it beats chanting ‘why are we waiting?’) Eventually however Zanzibar staff instructed everyone to leave.
The power cut affected the greater Seel St area, including other nearby bars. A similar cut occurred on the street the previous week; however on that occasion the Zanzibar was unaffected.
Hot Club’s Matthew Smith found time to say goodbye to friends as people left but was clearly disappointed and exasperated. Remarking “What can we say but ‘oops?’ What a pisser!”
