The Golden Virgins have called it a day after just one album and five singles.
The Sunderland band are keen not to blame the usual music differences, instead joking that it was down to ‘lethargy, alcoholism and a deep-seated hatred of the music industry.’
Despite widespread critical acclaim for their album ‘Songs of Praise’, they failed to match this in sales.
They were axed from XL Records early last year and went on to release the track ‘I Am A Camera’ independently.
The band said in a statement: “We would all like to thank everyone who helped us, the people who bought our records, the people who came to our shows, everyone on this mailing list, the people who helped us make our records.”
They added: “Do keep your eyes open for some heartbreakingly beautiful, gutwrenchingly personal and bleakly amusing solo material from Virgins frontman Lucas Renney in the near future.~
“Also in the pipeline is another from The Former Cell mates in which neil plays drums.”
The Golden Virgins will play their final ever gig at the Independent bar in Sunderland on October 27. Tickets cost £4.
