Mos Def was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct last night during the Video Music Awards.

The rapper and Hollywood actor held an impromptu performance outside New York’s Radio City Music Hall while the ceremony was taking place.

A large crowd gathered to watch before police were called. Mos Def and his entourage were asked to stop the show due to safety fears.

In a statement to MTV, the police said they were uncertain whether Mos Def didn’t hear their request or he was ignoring them.

They allowed him to perform one song ‘Katrina Clap’, then asked if he had a permit.

It’s unclear whether a permit was handed over, but, according to MTV’s source, they then began arresting people. .

Mos Def was held overnight and was released this morning (September 1).

However, Mos Def’s publicist Carleen Donovan claims the police actions were excessive, saying: "Mos Def was unjustly arrested tonight while performing on a flatbed track in New York City outside the Video Music Awards

"Mos Def was not out to break any laws. His only goal was to heighten the awareness of a serious situation that still exists in our country. He does not want people to forget that although it's one year later, the people and cities hit by the hurricane still need the help of the American people."
