The Beatles’ ‘Sgt Pepper’ has been voted the greatest album of all time by Radio 2.
The 1967 album beat Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ to the top spot in the poll of 100 albums.
The massive survey polled an impressive 220,000 listeners to the station, with a full run-down of the chart coming from DJ Simon Mayo at the weekend.
Others that charted high were U2’s ‘Joshua Tree’ at three, ‘Rumours’ by Fleetwood Mac at four and The Beatles' ‘Revolver’ at six.
Unsurprisingly considering listeners to the station, contemporary acts were largely given the cold shoulder in the poll.
Simon Mayo said: “It is a very impressive list and no surprise at all that Sgt Pepper is at the top.
“It revolutionised music and what we expect from an album. A fine choice indeed.”
Other landmark albums that appeared in the list were Mike Oldfield’s ‘Tubular Bells’ and Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side of the Moon.’
