More The Dykeenies - Watch The Dykeenies - New Idea

Not many bands sell out 350 capacity venue for their very first gig, Glasgow’s The Dykeenies did that just over a year ago at the ABC2. Ever since through word of mouth and the like they have been talked up by all and sundry to the point where this single, their debut release, comes with the expected mount of buzz. So is it justified? The answer: on this offering probably not. ‘New Ideas’ with the exception of a smattering of handclaps closely parallels the last two offerings of The Sunshine Underground but without the chunkier electro and percussion led grooves the Leeds outfit like to purvey. While front man Alan Henderson sings about having “so many new ideas” the backing vocals scream out for him to “show me” and to be quite frank we’re still waiting. ‘Will It Happen Tonight’ doesn’t provide us any answers either. Yes its a rather nice and shiny piece of skipping indie pop but we’ve heard it all before and we’re getting bored of it. Yet another decidedly average indie band, how many more can we take?
