Pink Floyd’s legendary former front man Syd Barrett has died at his home in Cambridgeshire a spokesman has confirmed.
Barrett passed away on Friday (July 7) due to complications to do with the singer’s diabetes.
His brother Alan confirmed his death to the paper, saying: "He died peacefully at home. There will be a private family funeral in the next few days."
A statement from the remaining members of Pink Floyd says: "The band are naturally very upset and sad to learn of Syd Barrett's death.
"Syd was the guiding light of the early band line-up and leaves a legacy which continues to inspire."
Barrett, real name Roger Keith Barrett, departed the Pink Floyd fold in 1968 and became a recluse for more than thirty years after a drug induced breakdown.
However, he was convinced by EMI to have a short solo career.
He produced two solo albums - ‘The Madcap Laughs’ and ‘Barrett’ – in the late 60s and early 70s.
In 1972 he formed the short lived band Stars with Ex-Pink Fairies member Twink but he left shortly after a disasterous gig at Cambridge's Corn Exchange.
He is thought to be the inspiration behind the song ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’ from Pink Floyd’s ‘Wish You Were Here’ album.
Barrett made a surprise appearance the Abbey Road sessions for the album and was present when the remaining members of Pink Floyd recorded the track.
