Universal Music Group have announced that they will sell CDs in cardboard packaging in an attempt to compete with download sales.
The world’s biggest record company home to the likes of U2 and Elton John will introduce a three tier system of packaging in Europe.
The cheapest cardboard packaging will see albums priced at £7 while the standard packaging with stay around £10 and they are also planning a deluxe range costing around £14.
Vice President Max Hole told the BBC: "We thought we should reboot the consumer's experience of buying CDs."
He added that the new cheaper packaging would be aimed at regenerating sales of older albums.
