For those who think that the market for melody-led singer songwriter’s is well and truly flooded, you obviously haven’t heard of Hattie and Charley Webb. But that’s OK, you soon will, as The Webb Sisters are due to hit the charts with the imminent release of their debut album ‘Daylight Crossing’. Still left scratching your head? Here’s a few must knows; they’re young, gorgeous and if their music was edible, it would melt in your mouth. ‘Daylight Crossing’ is the culmination of years of hard work and it’s finally paid off for the pair who decided to treat GIGWISE to an intimate chat whilst they enjoyed their first look at the at the new album. And there’s no prize for guessing how they feel about their newfound success.
“It’s a really good feeling” say’s Charley, the eldest of two; “We’re really happy to put it together, the songs have really come from the heart. It was a great process recording it so we’re happy to finally get it into our hands.” And they’re not the only ones who are happy with the end result. With interest growing in the girls, it’s seemingly difficult for them to wipe the Cheshire cat smile from their faces, and rightly so, as Charley goes onto explain: “I’m over the moon about it. And we’re equally excited that lots of the independent radio stations that we’ve visited are playing our music as well. We’ve had the chance to visit all sorts of corners of the UK that we probably wouldn’t have gone to otherwise, so that’s been great for us to do.”
Born and raised in Kent, with a father as a session drummer for Peter Skellern and The Dave Travis Band amongst others and with two brothers, also drummers, the girls were surrounded by music from an early age and took to it like the proverbial duck to water. Charley started to play the piano aged six and Hattie the harp at eight. But what can you expect from their music? Well, gorgeous vocals, soaring harmonies, enchanting melodies and comparisons to Fleetwood Mac for starters. “We love the Fleetwood Mac comparison because we’ve always loved their music.” Says Hattie; “Our dad being a rock and roll drummer himself played a lot of music in bands on the kind of country rock vibe. So I think to be compared to a band like Fleetwood Mac is a real honour.”
“And in terms of living up to it” continues Charley; “We’re not setting out to be anybody other than who we are and if in doing that we can be likened to bands that we really look up to then that’s just a total compliment.” But The Webb Sisters are keen to point out that there’s more to them than just music, as Hattie tries to explain; “There are other sides to us as well, like chocolate. Especially with me. You’re chocolate,” pointing at Charley “But I’m quite a bestiality chocolate person.”
“I like Kit Kat Chunky's and things like that.” Continues Charley “But there are other things that we love doing and if there weren’t I don’t think we’d have much to sing about. I mean we’ve written songs over the years about all sorts of things. Our lives, our friend’s lives, ups and downs and what we’ve encountered on the journey. And I’m really glad for all those things because I think it enriches us in every way.”
