Jack White left his hometown of Detroit because he was “drained” by the city’s “negativity”.
The White Stripes frontman – currently touring with his new band The Raconteurs – says he had tried to support Detroit’s unknown bands since finding success himself, but his efforts had proved ultimately futile.
He tells the BBC, “I did that part of trying to be non-egotistical, I tried to not make it about myself.”
However, White – possibly referring to his violent altercation with Von Bondies frontman Jason Stollemeister - says he realised he was “fighting a losing battle" and “couldn't take the negativity anymore".
“It was draining me, I had to get somewhere where I could breathe again,” he adds.
White recently relocated to Nashville, Tennessee – where The Raconteurs came together – and now lives in domestic bliss with his wife, British model Karen Elson and their new daughter Scarlett.
