London based band the Fields began rather unusually in a garden shed in Warwickshire. Singer Nick Peill, who was a primary school teacher at the time spent the school holidays holed up writing songs. He decided to quit his job and up sticks to London.
Combining pop sensibilities with folk ethics Fields have a true rural tinge to them that bears some similarity to Arcade Fire and Devendra Banhart. Add to that the combined talents of Icelandic vocalist/keyboard player Thorunn, drummer/vocalist Henry, bass player Matty, guitarist Jamie and vocalist Nick and you have the Fields.
Interesting facts about the band include: Thorunns father composed the Icelandic national anthem and she used to be a voice-over artist doing mainly pixie and elf voices. Drummer Henry allegedly has the most hats of any percussionist in the UK and his father played at Woodstock with the Grease Band. Bass player Matty cut hair for Franz Ferdinand, Kylie and was responsible for Bloc Parties famous ‘Blochead’ haircut. Jamie used to be a music journalist writing for many publications.
They played their live debut after only a few weeks of rehearsing. They have only been together a few months when they released their first single 'Song For The Fields' on their own label Black Lab Recordings. Mixing ‘lush pastoral harmonies’ and 1990’s shoegazing ethics that fuse together to create their own little world within the songs. Occasionally they try to offset it with blistering walls of white noise, and are keen not to sound too predictable. In the summer of 2006 they have a new EP out called ‘4 from the village’ and touring the festival circuit, including appearances at Reading and Leeds. They also recently completed ta headlining UK tour with dates supporting Larrikin Love to follow.
