Veteran singer-songwriter Neil Young has recorded a whole album’s worth of Iraqi War protest songs in just a few days – calling on America to impeach President Bush.
Young cut the album ‘Living With The War’ with a 100-strong choir after the South By Southwest Festival organiser Roland Swenson called upon him to return to his campaigning days, which saw Young songs such as Ohio form opinion against the Vietnam War in the seventies.
Singer Alicia Morgan, who took part in the sessions, has written on her website that the recording sessions were a highly-charged experience – with the Canadian veteran fully venting his spleen against Bush.
She says, “I'm not going to give the whole thing away, but the first line of one of the songs was, 'Let's impeach the president for lyin!'
“Turns out the whole thing is a classic, beautiful protest record. The session was like being at a 12-hour peace rally. Every time new lyrics would come up on the screen, there were cheers, tears and applause. It was a spiritual experience.”
Film director Jonathan Demme, who recently shot Young in concert, has confirmed the album is ready and will be released very soon.
He says, “Neil just finished writing and recording - with no warning - a new album called Living With the War. It all happened in three days.
"It is a brilliant electric assault, accompanied by a 100-voice choir, on Bush and the war in Iraq. Truly mind-blowing. Will be in stores soon."
