Acclaimed folk waif Jim Moray in no way settles for simple song structures and stripped down instrumentals and instead draws on vast orchestral arrangements to embellish ‘My Sweet Rose.’ Complete with a number of swooning movements and a lush smorgasbord of strings, xylophones, crashing cymbals, brass and all that, the sprawling seven-minute track offers a palette of sounds to the ears. Yet for all the yearning and gusto in his singing, when it comes down to it 23-year-old Moray seems to come second to the music. Still in its very ostentatious way, ‘My Sweet Rose’ is actually very affecting.
