Hot Chip ‘Over & Over’ (EMI) Released 27/02/06

Most of you will probably have heard this track by now; and in many cases it’s virulently catchy hooks will probably have dug their way deep into your memory. Taken from their forthcoming album ‘The Warning’, this is easily Hot Chip’s best single to date and sure to be their biggest hit. At once sarcastic (“Laid back/Laid back/Laid back? We’ll give you laid back!” Alexis sings, apparently in response to critics who said their first album was too – you guessed it – laid back) and unashamedly bouncy; this is a moment of understated pop genius. ‘Over and over and over and over and over/Like a monkey with a miniature cymbal’ goes the chorus: never has insistence been so insistent.
