A-side ‘Here Comes The Rumour Mill’ fits correctly into the cardboard box of angular post-punk-pop with slightly off the wall lyrics. You can almost hear the sideways glance and raised eyebrow, the polystyrene holders even fit around it with little effort. Not every song is based on the dude off the Your Country Needs You Posters, but ‘Kitchener’ is. Not too far removed from its predecessor, just a little heavier. But with ‘Elaine’ they come from an entirely different part of the mucial universe. A FolkLove song with a dreamy quality, it sounds like Pavement playing a Kinks song in the style of the Mystery Jets. Finishing up with ‘The Also Rans’ a strangely spooky and just a little troubled bit of self-deprecating humour. The Young Knives eh. Just when you think you have got ‘em nicely stuffed into the correct pigeon hole they pop out again and spill all over the floor.
