It's official. 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not' has become the fastest-selling debut album in UK chart history, selling more than 360,000 copies in its first week (more than the rest of the Top 20 combined).
A spokesman for HMV said: "In terms of sheer impact... we haven't seen anything quite like this since The Beatles.
"In the space of just a few weeks the Arctic Monkeys have gone from being relative newcomers to becoming a household name."
Along with the success of 'Whatever People Say...', the band have also enjoyed two number one singles with 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor' and last week's chart topper 'When The Sun Goes Down'.
They easily beat Richard Ashcroft's 'Keys To The World', which itself sold a highly credible 75,000 copies - this would have normally guaranteed the top spot.
However, in the singles chart the Monkeys were knocked off by Notorious BIG, Diddy and Nelly, who top this week's list with 'Nasty Girl'.
The only other notable entry in the singles chart was Preston's Ordinary Boys, whose rerelease of 'Boys Will Be Boys' went in at number nine.
