Nine Inch Nails have announced a new EP, ADD VIOLENCE, the second part in a promised trilogy, and shared a video for new track LESS THAN

The band returned with their first material since 2013’s well-received Hesitation Marks last winter, with the Not The Actual Events EP. Back then, frontman Trent Reznor said that this would form the first part of a trilogy, teasing the release of ADD VIOLENCE for the following Summer. Speaking to Zane Lowe on Beats 1 Radio, Reznor said the track is “Not entirely representative of where the rest of the EP goes. So this collection of five songs feels like brothers.”

ADD VIOLENCE will be available digitally from July 21, with a vinyl and CD release due on September 1. The download also promises a ‘physical component’, though it’s unclear what exactly this represents. A mysterious statement accompanying the download on the band’s website says: “Proper use of this recording requires it to exist in the physical world, as real as you are. Choosing this package gets you the digital files and we will shop the accompanying physical component to your residence which may provide additional clarity. Very limited supplies available.”

The tracklisting of ADD VIOLENCE is as follows:

The band performed She’s Gone Away, from the Not The Actual Events EP, on an episode of Twin Peaks last month. They’ve collaborated with director David Lynch before, with Reznor providing the soundtrack for his 1997 film Lost Highway, which included the band’s much-loved track The Perfect Drug. Lynch also directed the video for the band’s 2013 track Came Back Haunted.

If Reznor stays true to his word, the third and final EP in the set is due for release in approximately six months. “I have no idea what the last part of this will be. I know lyrically where it goes, but I don’t know what it’s going to sound like yet,” said Reznor on Beats 1.
