Right, I'm getting ready to be a student by practising my whinging.

Going to Lancaster which is divided up into 'colleges'. This means fuck all unless you live there, but everyone has to be a member of a college and they have their own common rooms and stuff. I'm not going to be living on campus.

Got a letter yesterday telling me I have to pay £30, compulsory, to join the college. Apparently the college will provide me with 'academic, financial and welfare' support, but I'm already paying them £3145 a year tuition fees and I expect that to be included.

AND I keep getting emails telling me to pre-order a 'purplecard'. This is basically an NUS card but you pay £12.50 a year for it. They don't tell you that every student is entitled to a free NUS card, but apparently at Lancaster if you get the free one it doesn't come with a photo and loads of places won't accept it. All the emails say that it's accepted nationwide but I know that's a load of shite because no one in Liverpool will know what a 'purplecard' is, everywhere just takes NUS.

Bad enough I'm paying over 3 grand a year for the privilege of education without them trying to sneak all this extra shit in.

I'm surprised trabs hasn't been on yet advocating some kind of dirty protest of the administration buildings.

nus and nus extra (was a tenner last year) both operate in liverpool, but the offers at some stores are dependent on having the nus extra card

which isn't fair but isn't just a localised issue

no idea on the college thing. that would be like paying to join the guild/students union and don't think that happens everywhere (and also sounds like paying for your personal tutor)

Yeah NUS extra is separate from the purple card, so there'll be loads of students paying £22.50 so they can get 10% off a haircut.

I remember the good old days when I could go to the cinema and pay student prices with my JMU staff card!

It sounds like a complete rip off to me. Doesn't the university provide wellfare support anyway? Or is it all handled by the colleges?

Re: the NUS card thing- I didn't have one for my entire degree, but found that most places accepted my library/ID card for discounts.

The costs just mount up more an more- if I wanted to go to the wine and cake reception after my degree I would have been forced to pay an extra £6.50! This is on top of the course fees and £120 per year surcharge for instrumental lessons (which surely should have been accounted for in the tuition fees for a music student).

Apparently you have to buy the £12.50 student card if you want to join any of the student clubs and societies because it covers insurance. Who the fuck takes out insurance to take yoga classes or whatever?

I spend the third year in France, and I'll probably choose to work full time rather than study there. I think they'll help me find accommodation and a job, but I still have to pay the full year's tuition fee.

Oh but I do get to go to a mature student buffet in Fresher's week and so far, it seems to be free... wooooo!
