This Festival started in 1993 at Mount Fuji and has kept it's name, despite moving from Mount Fuji to Naeba Ski resort. The mountain air is shockingly clean for those used to city life. Other non-band attractions are the stream running through the festival and beautiful design of everything.
The crowd are well-behaved, going crazy just at designated moments, such as when a rock band plays. The music is more varied than the 'rock' in the title suggests, with Bjork and Underworld having performed as well as Dinosaur Jr and Primal Scream.
If you can afford this amazing experience at the end of July, make sure you arrive early, as the camp-site is on a mountain. If you are left with a steep gradient to pitch on, you will wake up at the bottom of your tent in shapes you thought were the preserve of contortionists.
