Monday 3rd March saw the release of 'Hey, Petrunko!' the long-awaited second album by Ooberman. Their single, 'First Day Of The Holidays' will be coming out on 13th March, on their own label Rotodisc that is distributed through Cargo.
Founder members Dan Popplewell, Andy Flett and brother Steve formed the band in Bradford in 1989. Many years were spent recording at home and developing their sound before deciding to perform live. Eventually they recruited Sophia Chumney and moved to Liverpool in 1997 where they are still based.
In 1998 they signed with Graham Coxon's label Transcopic and released their first EP 'Shorley Walls'. Stephen Street, whose work includes The Smiths and Blur, produced their first album, 'The Magic Treehouse'. The band went on to play Festivals such as Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds and played support slots for bands such as Blur, Travis and The Happy Mondays.
Their first release on Rotodisc was the critically acclaimed mini album called 'The Running Girl' in October 2001. Their new album has been three years in the making. The title 'Hey Petrunko' refers to a Bulgarian love song. Popplewell, who played many of the instruments, has arranged, engineered, produced and mixed the album, as well as creating the sleeve design.
