Cook Off

Who needs a cooker when you have a car engine?! A step by step guide to cooking while on the road...

  • Thursday, July 10, 2008

On a road trip and don't want to sample the delights of that extortionate service station? Fear not for you can cook while you travel by following our guide to having a car-b-que!

What you need:

1 Car
Meal Ingredients
Aluminium Foil

Step 1

Decide on your meal. Depending on the distance of your trip you can cook just about any kind of meal, from cuts of meat or roasts on long journeys to something simpler on a short trip.

Here are some examples of how long it would take to cook various items:

Chicken – 60 miles (70-80mph)
Fish – 60-100 miles
Potatoes – 55 miles

Obviously these cooking times with differ slightly from car to car but they are good to use as a general guideline. If you want the ultimate cookbook for making meals with your car try and get hold of a copy of 'Manifold Destiny'.

Step 2

Prepare the meal as you would for a normal oven

Step 3

Time to prepare the food for your car.  Wrap your food in a couple of layers of foil; too few layers and the foil could leak, too many and the food could end up being undercooked. You could add some butter or oil to the foil to keep the food moist as it cooks. Always make sure the ends of the foil packet are tightly folded.

Step 4

Where you place the food on the the engine is all important. Most people say the best place is the exhaust manifold as it gives off the most heat. Don't place the food on any plastic covered surfaces as they won't provide enough heat to cook your meal thoroughly. Food that needs less heat to cook can be placed on valve covers if you have multiple packages.

Step 5

Make sure you secure the foil food package to the engine, you don't want to leave it on on the road somewhere during your journey! A car's existing parts such as the radiator hose can be used or you could tie it down with wire.

Step 6

Drive! Those who are inexperienced at the car-b-que make take a few attempts before they get the cooking times right but soon enough you'll be a connoisseur of road trip cooking.

Step 7

Enjoy!

Tips And Warnings

- Don't cook on your car while it is raining, it can be dangerous.

 - Be careful when removing the food from the engine, it will be hot.

- As we've previously said make sure the food is wrapped properly, you don't want it all over your engine.
