Nothing materializes from nothing. Ask a quantum physicist. So bands that tell you that they are completely their own entity are full of it. If they try to sell you the whole “we came from nothing” spiel, they’re clearly talking out of their backside. They can, however, be inspired by a diverse collection of musical sounds, to meld into something that is unique, and completely unto themselves. Holy **** is such a band. These fiery upstarts from the land of Canucks are about to take their one-of-a-kind sensationalism out of the loving and protective gaze of the Mounties, across the Atlantic, and into the UK to share this diversity with a different crowd, spreading the love. Graham Walsh was able to tell us how far that love, just so happens to reach.
“One of the best things about Holy **** is the fact that we can be influenced by ANYTHING, and make it work into our sound. We can be influenced by another band, or even a piece of gear will inspire a song.” This idea, which is has helped to create an amazing live show, is displayed in every facet of the band's existence. The on-the-spot concoction is not solely derived from a desire to appease the expectations of the audience, but it’s an emotional crescendo dropped into a colander and thrown into the midst of the eager on lookers.
The band captures the strength of their individual talents, and voltrons that power, and in this, draw in listeners. This makes a large part the success of Holy **** dependent on the crowd, but even more so the interaction. Graham reflects: “The audience is definitely my favorite part of our shows. It's hard sometimes to tell if people are into our music, but if the people are dancing, yelling and screaming...then that definitely feeds us energy on stage, and we'll perform better because of it. It's a give and take scenario. If everyone is sitting back with their arms crossed staring at us, then it's a lot harder for us to feel like we're into it.”
Musically, the band set out, only to please themselves and create the kind of music they felt would fill a void in our music today. It's a non-knobbed, programmed free organic sound. “With Holy ****, I'm building every sound from the ground up. I find that it allows me to be more creative in a way, and fortunately”, says Walsh. “I play in a band that's not trying to emulate, or sound like anyone else...We wanted to create electronic type music, but don't have access to expensive synths or samplers. Plus, we're 'rock' musicians at heart, so I think that comes across a lot too.” With this dedication, and energy, high hopes are wound into the pulse of the band, in route to the UK. But not too high: “I've learned that it's best not to have too many expectations. Especially in this business, because you never know what's going to happen. We might totally flop, or me might sell out every night of the tour.”
