Dead Disco will go down in history amongst the statisticians of the indie world and will no doubt become a question in any discerning music quiz. For earlier this month, barely a year after forming, they released the last ever single on the legendary Fierce Panda label in the form of their track ‘Automatic’. Add this new found notoriety to the buzz the all girl three piece from Leeds had already created around their live shows and previous releases and its obvious that Dead Disco are something of a hot property. So what better time for Gigwise to catch up with Victoria, Lucy and Marie for a chat about where it all began and where it’s all going.
The three girls of Dead Disco got together in the summer of 2005 while attending the same Art School in Leeds with other motives than it seemed the right thing to do. “We all played instruments since we were young and being in a band seemed like the natural progression,” is the simple reason when given for wanting to form the band with Marie adding that she wanted to be in Roxette as a child (While Victoria wanted to be ballerina and Lucy Fred Astaire). However, things didn’t exactly go swimmingly from the start and the story goes that rumours began to spread amongst the rest of Leeds’ burgeoning music scene that the band were manufactured and they in fact couldn’t play their instruments.
However, this rumour was soon swept aside as people began to realise that the truth was in fact the opposite with even the uber-indie iLiKETRAiNS apparently becoming big fans. It didn’t come easy though as Dead Disco reveal: “We all put our whole lives into the band so we hoped it would do well. We used to do practices from 10am until midnight before we did our first gig.” This devotion to the cause wasn’t exactly conducive to their lives outside of the band though, namely their University work. “Vic had already finished so she was lucky, but we (Marie and Lucy) had just started our final year,” we’re told. “The band took over much to our lecturers’ disappointment.” Their parents needn’t have despaired too much though as both Marie and Lucy have both now graduated giving them plenty of time to concentrate on all things Dead Disco.
