The Fallout Trust aren’t your typical two a penny six piece London based band. Specialists in alternative art rock fused with indie pop they may be, but with The Fallout Trust it’s more than music alone. It’s art, ideas, challenges, evolution and of course parties. Half the band is made up of siblings Joe, Matt and Jess Winter while Guy Connelly, Gavin Ellis and Matt Watson are fellow school friends. All six of them live, write and record together at ‘Q Quarters’, a converted warehouse space in East London that has no windows. Hmmmm. Hardly the most inspiring of places for an up and coming band to nurture their creative muse. Or so you might think. Gigwise catches up with Guy and he explains all:
“Our inspirations generally tend to be ourselves because there are no windows in our house, you can’t see out so you tend to look at each other instead. There’s no reason it seems to us that you have to be the same thing for more than one song. You might want to completely change your tack and I think our album does that a few times. We’ve always thought that’s one of our strengths. We all come from various backgrounds musically so to deny that and to over distil things until you’ve got one sickly sweet sound has never really been on our agenda.”
So just what is on the bands agenda? Well its simple really, to make good intelligent music and on their terms. The band decided to record and produce their debut album ‘In Case Of The Flood’ themselves. A process that undoubtedly pushed them to their limits, but helped in developing their own unique sound and won them praise and respect along the way. Guy continues:
“The best thing about it was that we had enough time to experiment and work things out on our own. We’d worked with a producer before and it hadn’t really worked out so we decided we wanted to produce it ourselves. When we started to record it we realised we didn’t really know what we were doing, so we had to kind of learn how to record as well as get everything down that we wanted to. So whilst not being perfect we were really happy with the way it worked out.”
So far so good. But with three singles already released from the album, the decision was made to re-release their debut single ‘When We Are Gone’. An unusual step for a band to take who are respected and known as much for their music, as their passion for change and experimentation. Why not release some new material?
“It was partly a record company decision. It didn’t catch the world alight on the first time of release. We wanted to put something else out off the album but they wanted to give one more push for this record. The album was recorded a while before it was released as well so by the time it came out it was a huge relief. But now we’ve started to play new songs already so that’s re-invigorated the live set.”
