Why we're hugely excited about the scuzzy Madrid sounds of Deers

The new ladies of lo-fi are from Madrid

We’ve heard lo-fi garage-rock pop from all-girl line ups before, but maybe not from two Spanish senoritas from Madrid.

At the start of September Deers - Ana García Perrote and Carlotta Cosials – took to the stage at London's Corsica Studios with their live-set bandmates, Ade Martin and Amber Grimbergenare. If you missed it we think it’ll turn out to be one of your big regrets of 2014.

On 'Bamboo', their initial track that made waves this summer, twee girly backing vocals rub up against a nonchalant, throaty Nico-ish lead, stopping it short of mere Shangri-Las pastiche. The hazy, up-and-down surf guitars of 'Trippy Gum', second track on their demo, transports you back to a time when a walk through a club was to wade through thick cigarette smoke.

The more upbeat toe-tapper 'Castigadas en el Granero' (which roughly translates as “Grounded in the Barn”) keeps the 60s surf a-flowing, alongside echoing ghostly vocals, like Gothenburg’s indie-poppers Love Is All nicely warmed up in the Mediterranean sun.

Watch: Video for Deers Bamboo below.

The girls have a sound and lyrics older than their years - apparently the first CD they ever listened to was The Strokes’ Room on Fire, not Is this It. They certainly sing about a yellow-tinged teen-angst world they have probably never known: “I know you’re not hungover today,” they lament, “you’re classifying your cassettes”.

There’s a disarmingly naïve meta-retro feel to the whole package, a bit like 18-year-olds using 90s disposable camera filters to distort the Instagrams. Perhaps it’s all too DIY and perfect to be true, but we dare you to watch this video and not want to catch them live. The good news? They're playing a short UK tour in November.
