Mercury Prize - Who To Vote For: Amy Winehouse

So tonight will see the winner of this year’s Nationwide Mercury Music Prize crowned in London. Arctic Monkeys, Maps and The View are just three of the contenders for the annual prize which – apart from a £20,000 prize – bolsters the album sales of all involved.

I’m not going for any of those three though. I’m not even going to follow the popular assumption that the Arctic Monkeys will become the first band to win the award two years in a row.

I’m going for…drum roll…*suspense*…Amy Winehouse. I don’t think anyone saw Winehouse’s second album coming. Since ‘Back To Black’ was released last October, it’s hung to the UK album charts like a leech; born more massively successful singles, and; given Winehouse the success she’s always look destined to obtain.

But then, the fallout. The singers alleged drug addiction is being splattered across the tabloids making on a daily basis – painting Winehouse as the female version of Pete Doherty. We’re already at the stage where we could lose one of the 21st century’s most alluring songwriters to ‘lyric enhancing’ drugs – do we really want to have to worry about losing another one?

Winehouse needs a boost. Give her the Mercury Music Prize to give her the wake up she needs to realise her talent’s to important to lose.
