    About

Award winning punk jazz innovators WorldService Project (WSP) are erupting across the UK this autumn and winter with a series of dates promoting new materail ahead of their second album in 2012. The London based unit have been described by Time Out as having “big things (lying) ahead for them” and were also dubbed as “brilliant post-prog funk” (Jazzwise Magazine), a “tour de force” (York Press) and “really enjoyable top quality jazz” (Organ Art Magazine). WSP’s intense live sound has taken 2011 by storm, with dates in Paris, London, Oslo, Lyon, Bergen and Trondheim, as well as Brecon and Swanage Jazz Festivals. Led by pianist/composer Dave Morecroft, WSP’s music speaks through dark, intense building passages, winding through dissonance, complex rhythmic manipulation and extreme dynamics. Other times it draws on the language of 20th Century Classical composers layered over biosterous grooves more commonly found in albums by heavy rock artists. The result is high-octane experimental, but accessible music with a smile upon its face. In September London-based WorldService Project are kicking off their match & fuse joint adventures in music with bands from Scandanavia and Europe, based around their bi-monthly residency at London’s premier Vortex Jazz Club. Match & fuse is a touring exchange programme set up by WorldService Project to enable them to perform with other like-minded artists and groups across Europe and for those groups to come to the UK. The aim is that these groups will be able to learn from one another, share cultural backgrounds and to build up relations and fan bases across Europe for their music to reach wider audiences. First up is their double-bill with Norwegians, SynKoke, including tour dates in Norway and the UK ending at the Vortex on 23 September. Each gig will see a set by each band, and a roar-up of all on stage, accompanied by the release of a limited edition CD. WorldService Project won the Peter Whittington Jazz Award in 2010 for their innovation and the infectious enthusiasm of their music, and the award is enabling their first match & fuse collaboration with Synkoke. Led by pianist Dave Morecroft, WorldService Project’s combination of lyricism with burning intensity, unruly progressions and flowing melodic phrases has quickly brought them to the forefront of the UK scene. They released their debut album Relentless earlier this year, acclaimed by Jazzwise as “the Led Bib you can dance to”. SynKoke are the perfect match no. 1: with an eclectic background in many genres of music, together these musicians produce a dark and driving energy of Nordic jazz infused with British progressive rock. Their second album The Ideologist to be released in August 2011 was recorded over 24 hours in Bergen, produced by Røyksopp-guitarist Kato Ådland. “the prog jazz Shostakovich dreamed of playing”… match & fuse continues in November with German trio, Schulbus, and collaborations in 2012 being planned with Irish, French and Italian bands.
