About
The Tivoli, named after the ‘kop’ end of Rotherham United’s now defunct Millmoor football ground,
have been established in their current line-up since late 2007. The four piece have created a
sound of epic proportion, which laces an electronic-dance edge into a rock and roll ambience.
The band signed to Shiva Records in the summer of 2006, a time when exchanges in personnel were
being negotiated. In fact, at the time of signing the deal, only Lee, Damo and Gaz were members and
auditioning bass players. Russ was the ‘chosen one’ and joined the band towards the end of recording
'National Service'.
Although it took just over two years to record, their debut album, 2009’s ‘National Service’, was received
to positive reviews amongst music journalists and fans alike. Notable supporters included BBC Radio
One’s Steve Lamacq and BBC Introducing’s Iain Hodgson.
An impressive supporting cast was contracted to the album. Guest musicians on the record include
Inder Goldfinger, whom is an established writer himself, but best known as the percussionist in Ian
Brown’s band. In fact, samples of his tabla work on ‘My Town’ are regularly heard at The Tivoli’s live shows.
He also played on fan’s favourite ‘Drop Me off in Rotherham’, a song which was later released as a
promotional download as part of an initiative with Rotherham United FC. In addition, Designer’s Republic
also produced the memorable artwork for the sleeve of National Service.
Another notable supporter of the band was Richard H. Kirk of legendary music pioneers ‘Cabaret Voltaire’,
so much so that The Tivoli’s second studio album was produced in collaboration with them. Cabaret
Voltaire reworked and remodelled particular songs from 'National Service' and a handful of newly written
Tivoli songs to create ‘National Service Rewind’. The album was released in May 2010, and was rapidly
elevated to the recommended release racks of high street and internet retailers across the UK.
Here and now, The Tivoli re-enter the musical fray to begin their assault on 2011 with a new single from
their yet untitled third studio album. ‘The Messenger’, which is already being played on the BBC Introducing
airwaves, negotiates the dance-rock demographic to smack dirty and hard with attitude and swagger.
The single, accompanied with various remixes is available nationwide from SATURDAY 5TH MARCH.
