About
Amoriste is an up-and-coming indie band delivering a unique brand of Britpop complete with catchy melodies, uplifting beats and crafty lyrics. Originally formed in 2007 in Chelmsford, Essex (the birthplace of radio itself) and performing under previous guises including the well-known Soprano, Amoriste is now complete with a four-man line-up consisting of Liam Tolan (vocals/guitar), Phil Cockerton (keys), David Crawford (bass) and Rael Bearman (drums).
Amoriste began their career playing any venues they were given – living rooms, basements, and small neighbourhood pubs. However, it wasn’t long before the band began gaining local attention, especially with the release of their 2007 single Dirty Tricks. Once the single began receiving national airplay, the band were invited to fill more impressive slots, including supporting the likes of Ash and Supergrass at various UK festivals. Their newfound popularity wasn’t limited to the UK, however; the band soon embarked on a German tour as well as playing the Rokaj festival in Croatia, sharing the main stage with the likes of The Lemonheads. The band also self-released an EP in 2008, selling 500 copies at various tour dates throughout the year. After a short hiatus in early 2009 to manage line-up changes, Amoriste retreated into the thick undergrowth of the English countryside to refocus their efforts, hone their songwriting skills and perfect their live set.
Late 2009 saw Amoriste triumphantly return better than ever, with numerous new recordings and two promotional videos for the tracks Berlin and This Park Is Mine. Their new material, recently described as “anthemic indie tunes” by NME (October 2009), mixes a unique sound with hints of musical influences including Athlete, Keane, Elbow, and Snow Patrol. The band completed a successful 8-date UK tour in October 2009 and major plans are in the works for 2010, including heavy hometown London and Essex gigging, a spot on the exclusive Club Fandango circuit, revisiting favourite UK and German cities and studio time slotted for late spring.
Only back in the game a few months, Amoriste have definitely begun their journey back into the hearts and minds of indie pop lovers everywhere.
"Anthemic indie tunes."
- NME, September 2009
"Perfect poppy riffs, brilliant harmonies and, in vocalist Liam Tolan, a singer and frontman who seemed born for the role. Amoriste are a definitively English band with the potential to really explode into the mainstream. Opening track Secrets is one of the most radio friendly tracks I've heard all summer!"
- Friend Rock magazine (Manchester), October 2009
"The parallels in style with acts such as The Feeling and Keane are obvious, and with every passing song, their ‘built-for radio’ songwriting and musicianship is further reinforced. Songs such as ‘Turn Out Their Lights’ and ‘This Park is Mine’ are piano-driven pop songs which are one appearance on Orange Unsigned Act away from Music TV and Radio 1…but all of this is done with a level of class and an air of genuine passion from the band."
- Is This Music? magazine (Scotland), November 2009
"These guys really are some of the best performers and songwriters known to grow up in Essex, and bound to join the line of legends gone before them."
- BBC DJ Mike Bromfield
