In the beginning a couple of lads from Sheffield got guitars for Christmas, and practiced to the point of competition. They were joined by a couple of other lads from Sheffield, and practiced to the peak of perfection. Then they showered crowds with their demos and so words from multitudes of mouths spread to the ears of many, and became essential parts of the very dedicated fans of the band that had so far not released any songs.
Label representatives crumpled in the back of venues stiffened in wonder of the frenzied crowds between them, and the band they had always wanted to change (but just a little). In June 2005 ‘Domino’ won the label lottery.
With influences ranging from The Smiths and The Clash, through hip hop, to modern day Northern poets, and George Orwell; Arctic Monkeys ARE the new generation; more residing on the pristine velveteen seats of the Franz-stro-tine throne, than suffocating between the dusty cracks. A stride a-top of the cool collaboration of drums and guitars is the more than mildly Northerly toned Vocal Prize Winner: Turner.
Their first single ‘Fake Tales of San Francisco’, from their Debut EP tells of the, “Echo through the air, and there’s a few bored faces in the back, all wishing they weren’t there.” With followers’ avidly memorising lyrics before the tongue tied Turner gets a chance, it’s not likely a likely line for their autobiography.
"Don’t believe the hype", Turner teases on the live video of their #1 single; ‘I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor’, Don’t believe him!
Arctic Monkeys debut album ‘Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not’ became the fastest selling debut album in UK chart history, clocking sales of 363,735 in its first week. With record sales reaching over 34,000 in the first week in the US.
Publicly lashing out at the hype surrounding their band, Arctic Monkeys released a five track EP entitled ‘Who The Fuck Are Arctic Monkeys’, and stating that they ‘don’t want to live off old albums’ have already demoed over 10 tracks for their sophomore effort.
