Pete and Carl’s band might be long gone but their spirit lives on in the East end of London. New bands who take their inspiration from literature and the arts over The Jam and The Clash are popping up all over the place. Larrikin Love however look set to eclipse their ragamuffin contemporaries Mystery Jets and Jamie T. Describing Larrikin Loves sound is like describing a circus, there is that much going on. They take the shambolic punk ethos of The Libertines mix it with ska and calypso before sprinkling Irish folk over the top and you are somewhere near to the magic.
Larrikin Love have the ability to set indie disco floors alight whilst at the same time satisfying peoples wish for something a bit deeper. They list their influences as Rimbaud, Wilde, Shane Mcgowan, Patrick Wolf and George Orwell, so not exactly the typical band then.
To date the band has released two singles ‘Happy as Annie’ and ‘Six Queens’. ‘Happy as Annie’ is two and a half minutes of pure genius designed to make your feet tap quicker than God designed them whilst ‘Six Queens’ starts with a dreamy intro quickly swapping it for a guitar lick that allows Edward to sing “There’s a symphony in my heart and I lost all my morals”. For those of you looking for a new hero you have just found him, he goes by the name of Edward Larrikin and his band are Larrikin Love. Remember the name.
