Cat Power

Cat Power

Cat Power is effectively the pseudonym of Chan Marshall, the puzzling enigma behind some of the most haunting independent music today. Born and raised in Georgia, she later dropped out of high school to pursue a musical career. This led her to Atlanta, Georgia, where she adopted the nickname that would guide her life.

From Atlanta, she migrated to New York City and made a name for herself through touring with indie rocker Liz Phair in 1994. In 1995 she released Dear Sir and in 1996 released both Myra Lee and What Would the Community Think?, the latter after signing with Matador Records.

It was two more years until her next work, Moon Pix, which would prove to be her first move into the mainstream. Through its successful singles and sincere critical acclaim, Moon Pix introduced Cat Power to the indie rock world. However she turned from original material, choosing instead to release The Covers Record in 2000, covering artists like The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan.

Three years later she resurfaced with original material and released You Are Free, her most successful album yet, which featured guest work by unexpected artists such as Eddie Vedder and Dave Grohl. In 2004 she released the DVD known as Speaking For Trees, a perplexing work which featured 2 hours of Marshall performing in the woods.

January of 2006 saw the release of The Greatest, a critically praised and commercially successful album which showcased Marshall’s intimate, powerful style of music. She had planned to go on a U.S. tour supporting the album, but canceled due to “health-related” problems.

Her aura of mystique, her tendency towards rambling, disordered concerts, and even her visual appearance (she is often hidden behind long, dark hair) often lead to assumptions about Chan Marshall, but through her interviews and her music, it’s clear that she is a three-dimensional musical force.
