Annie Lennox has called for an end to the violence in Gaza, which has now entered its seventh day.

The former Eurythmics singer said she had been “shaken to the core” by footage of the conflict.

More than 400 people are believed to have been killed since Israeli forces launched a bombing campaign against the leaders of the Palestinian Sunni paramilitary organisation Hamas last week.

Speaking at a press conference in London, Lennox said: "A few days after Christmas I came downstairs, put the television on and saw smoke pyres emanating from buildings and it shook me to the core.

"I was thinking, as a mother and as a human being, how was this going to be a solution to peace?

"It's a question of human rights, human values that goes beyond Jewish, Muslim, nothing to do with any of that. Therehas to be a place ultimately where people come to the table."

The latest violence, which has threatened to derail any hope of peace in the Middle East, was triggered after Hamas began firing rockets into Israel.

Respect MP George Galloway and Bianca Jagger have also called for a ceasefire.

  • Israel planned the Massacre way before any rockets were fired by Hamas. Further, Israel has been starving the Palestinians for over 18 months. This terrorist act by Israel was completely unprovoked! Attacking a democraticaly elected government (Hamas) with the support of the US and UK. Good for Annie for seeing the Human tragedy in all this

  • I applaud Israel for their battle against tyranny. Surrounded by so many enemies, it's about time they started whittling down that Muslim population to at least even the sides up a little. YEA!!!!!!!!

  • I believe, the secret is, persuading Hamus to let the U.N intervene. The U.N is a global organisation and they have made so many peace moves i.e the most recent Basra, that Palestine and Israel are going to have to comply with, if they want their countries to progress.I agree with Annie Lennox that it is a question of human rights, but who's going to be the educator. If the U.N were allowed to intervene we may see a different picture. I would like to know if there are any peace brigades inv

  • Figuring out a way to end the violence is really very simple. Israel needs to be left alone. Israel has never provoked war. They always react. If no one attacks her, she will not attack others. It's important to understand that Israel is a tiny strip of land smack dab in the middle of a huge Arab world. All Israel wants is to exist on that tiny piece of land and be left alone.

  • Annie Lennox's statement to the press relating to the Gaza war is surprising by its total disregard for Israeli suffering. Israelis have had to submit to hundreds of terrorist attacks, ie. attacks against their civilian population for over 40 years now. In a recent eight day period, 300 missiles were sent into Israel with missiles at times hitting southern cities, towns and villages. The constant psychic toll of never knowing if a missile will claim you is a staggering demand to make of
